Intra-African trade: Zambia’s border posts – in pictures

As African governments seek to build a free trade area from Cape Town to Cairo, efforts are afoot to make it easier to trade across borders, particularly for small businesses.

An elderly woman from South Kordofan is photographed shortly after arriving at a refugee registration centre in the Yida refugee camp in Unity State, South Sudan. In recent weeks, aid agencies have reported a steep influx of new arrivals, at times exceeding 700 per day. More than 30,000 refugees currently reside in Yida having fled the war between the Republic of Sudan and rebel forces in South Kordofan.

In pictures: The many images of Africa's daily life

Africa is one of the most diverse places on earth however perceptions of daily life on the continent are often skewed around issues such as famine, poverty and conflict. These photographs have been chosen by Kenyan artist Jepchumba, who runs the website African Digital Artist, to coincide with the BBC Africa Debate on the continent’s global image. She also wrote the text.
